Dental Implants are small titanium fixtures which serve as a replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. It will bond with the bone over time and thus serve as an anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental Implants can be used to replace single, multiple, or all teeth.

Single Missing Tooth

If sufficient bone is available replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant has several advantages:

• Teeth either side do not need to be drilled or undergo additional loading
• The surrounding bone is supported and prevented from further resorption
• Implants are usually a longer lasting option
• Implants usually are stronger and support the bite forces better
• They don't move around and interfere with speech like dentures

In some cases a crown can be placed at the same appointment as the implant is placed thus avoiding the need to wear a temporary denture

Several teeth missing

When several teeth are missing it can become difficult to chew properly. Replacing these teeth with dental implants can give the confidence to choose any food without worry of a moving denture or un-comfortable sensations. Quite often if the several teeth are missing in the same area a bridge can be firmly attached to the underlying implants as seen in the illustration above.

The all-on-4 technique has revolutionised the way we can now replace a full arch or a full mouth of missing teeth. It allows fixed teeth to be installed on the same day the dental implants are placed. This can significantly reduce time in the dental chair and reduce pain, stress, and cost compared with traditional techniques.

The procedure involves detailed planning, usually with a CT scan to assess the correct and best place to install 4 strategically placed dental implants. Our patients can now walk in with no or badly damaged teeth and have their implants and a tempory bridge fitted all on the same day. This replaced with a permanent bridge after 3-4 months.

Dr Cooper began his implant career in 1993 when he restored his first implant bridge. In 1997 he attended an 18 month training program at Sheffield University, regarded now as one of the best training programs in the UK. Since then he has held several posts at the Newcastle Dental School as well as a full time practice commitment. In addition to further training in this country he has also been trained in Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Jersey and the United States. Anthony now trains and mentors local Dentists also wishing to undertake implant treatment.
